It's not, it's a very bold and elegant piece of design - one of the most impressive junctions on the entire network :D

Col wrote:The A648 was indeed the bit from the M1 J24. It passed the Ratcliffe Power Station and after passing Clifton, it followed the present day B679 to end up at the junction of the A60/A606.

It was all changed to the A453 soon after.
It was built as an unclassified spur from M1 to the power station before being extended to the Crusader island at Clifton. The present A453 was B679 to that island which then passed through Gotham through to Kegworth, before the spur was extended and numbered A648.

Later the A453 was re-routed round EMA to J24 with the route via Long Eaton being renumbered, well before the A42.

I'm sure the A648 stopped at the ring road though.

No, my 1976 map has the road carrying on down the B679 'Wilford Lane'. In fact it was the primary route south of the city.

M56 J8 is somewhat unusual, and not much of it either:!:

I know that for a while in the early 1970's this was the western end of the eastern section of the M56, but why oh why does J8 exist as a single entity? Could it not have been merged into J7 :?:

J13 on the M56 is pretty unusual in that it doesn't exist  I would love to know as to why, as I have often speculated whether it was the "good luck" factor that caused this. Any takers?

The M60 has quite a few interesting junctions - J25 & 26 spring to mind.

The whole J5-8 complex will be quite something when opened too.

We have speculated in the past that there might have been plans to extend the M57/A5300 across the Mersey to join the M56 at J13, but I'm not aware of any firm evidence for this.
