Catcliffe Interchange is junction 33 of the M1. Despite the motorway through the junction opening in 1967, the junction itself did not open until the A630 Sheffield Parkway to the south opened in c1975, with Rotherway opening to the north in 1976.
This junction is the middle of three busy ones on this stretch of the M1 near Sheffield. It is busy because it serves as the main route into Sheffield and Rotherham. At peak times, particularly in the evenings, traffic queues for up to a mile on the Sheffield Parkway approaching the junction.
Recently, when leaving the M1 North at junction 33, both of the lanes on the sliproad now head onto Sheffield Parkway. This has helped to ease congestion, although this is still a busy junction.
This junction has had some improvement works done to it, including widening approaches, the roundabouts itself and also widened one mile of Sheffield Parkway to D3.
