This new housing estate was completed around 2005 and has been lit by these post-top Sapphires installed on gold columns! Very classy indeed!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Dec 07, 2008 by RojojnrThere are still plenty of Alpha 3's on the Canterbury Ring Road. Sadly this double column has been the victim of lighting vandalism and now possesses a Philips SGS203 and Alpha 3 on the same double column. In the foreground a pristine Alpha 3 (but this column is not currently working - likely to be a bulb failure)
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Nov 11, 2006 by Brenley CornerThese silver Heritage streetlights, with Urbis Albany lanterns, currently blanket most of Dublin's city streets. Most old streetlights are replaced for these. These lights are on the Quays, the two busy one-way systems with the River Liffey in between, which I think these look elegant lining up one by one facing the river.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Oct 27, 2006 by DorsetWayA row of old unsleeved concrete streetlights along Wilton Terrace by the Grand Canal. It is a bit of a surprise that these lights haven't been sleeved over the past years though some of them have concrete crumbling away (spalling) the third column is seen to have been patched over with tape. The lanterns are of the top entry style. These will probably go in the next few years being swapped with the silver reproduced 'heritage' streetlights which currently dominate the streets of Dublin.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jun 04, 2006 by DorsetWayNewish lamp standards along the city quays in the docklands. A far cry from a few years ago!

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 12, 2009 by AAndyBecause Westminster is home to the royalty and government officials, it is very much a conservation area in terms of streetlighting. This beauty is just over the road from Buckingham Palace and, after consultation with Lampman, he has confirmed that the lantern and bracket date back to the 1960s/early 70s, but the column is much older (although he didn't specify a date).

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Mar 20, 2006 by DavidBrownWell, maybe not singing, but the many long tubes of low pressure sodium lamps in this tunnel like to hum 24/7. The tunnel carries Stoneham Lane under the M27 near Jct5.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 08, 2006 by sotonsteveThis is one of the Cheltenham lights.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jun 25, 2006 by TruveloInteresting old street light fitted on the step wall from B4118 Lockhurst Lane to Durbar Avenue steps Coventry. The adjacent car sales lot has used the bracket to fix its bunting from.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jun 23, 2007 by leekmanNorth east view with Berkswell station behind. I couldnt make my mind up to put it in street lighting or signs as it also shows a sign advising cyclists to rejoin the carriageway after using the underpass at the station and the light is a top mounted example which Ive not seen too many of. 29 June 2007
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jun 30, 2007 by leekmanThis was taken in 2001 and they have since bitten the dust
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jun 27, 2007 by TruveloThis is the top of Mucklow Hill and most of the original columns containing SOX are still in situ. The original SOX lanterns were slim bowl Z9554's but most have been replaced by MA's. On the left hand side is a post top Vectra which is a casual replacement for the SOX. All these columns are now being replaced by a totally new installation of post top Arcs. It's not only the lighting that's changing - the speed limit here used to be 40mph and the carriageway heading up the hill was two lanes. A year or so ago the speed limit was cut to 30 and the 40mph limit now starts in the distance. The speed limit reduction is bad enough but the worst thing is the lane drop before the summit of the hill. This is really annoying if you're stuck behind something slow.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Mar 13, 2008 by TruveloSome of the old S&L columns are being replaced on Hagley Road West. Birmingham is one of a few authorities not to mix different lighting types so the new columns are having SOX lanterns fitted.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Mar 13, 2008 by TruveloThe shorter brackets are on the outside of the curve
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Nov 25, 2009 by TruveloStrangely, among the geared MA50s is a lone Alpha 4 (albeit missing its bowl). I've a horrible feeling an Iridium casual replacement is imminent here!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Dec 19, 2009 by RojojnrHog Hill Road is home to a single unsleeved CU Arc 2D concrete column with an MA installed on it - I doubt if this is the original lantern as it looks newer than the column. There is a 1980s hockeystick installation behind with a version of the geared MA90 from the same period on it, so perhaps the MA you see here could be a casual replacement for an earlier geared MA from the 80s.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Dec 19, 2009 by RojojnrAbout midway along White Hart Lane, the lighting changes briefly to SGS203s and a few casual replacement Iridiums on S&L brackets like those seen on Suttons Lane in Hornchurch with MA90s before the Fabrikats and MA50s return. I presume the reason for the lighting change is to provide 'white' light to increase safety at night around the shops, although exactly how much safer I'm not sure!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Dec 19, 2009 by RojojnrI wonder if these are vintage or just modern replicas?
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Sep 21, 2009 by TruveloLong arm street lamp on wooden post which is leaning at that angle! between B4455 Fosse Way and Hunningham village north east of Leamington Spa. There are about 4 or 5 more along this stretch of long and short arm type, the one outside the Red Lion pub being the last. 030507
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on May 03, 2007 by leekmanA typical street lighting installation from the Isle of Wight; an arched-over 8m steel column (in this case Abacus) with a MRL6 fitted. It is rare to find any functional style lantern on the island apart from the MRL6 or SRL8.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Apr 23, 2007 by sotonsteveThis private road off Colemans Stairs Road is lit end-to-end by these Victorian gas lanterns - with SON bulbs fitted, however! There are so many models of gas lanterns, and they all look very similar, so could somebody help identify these lanterns in the following few pics? Many thanks if you can!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jun 16, 2008 by RojojnrSome lucky soul living on Colemans Stairs Road has the pleasure of having this lovely old Victorian gas lantern installed in their front garden. However, like the others on the private road, it has a standard light bulb rather than gas filaments fitted!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Jun 16, 2008 by RojojnrHere's a closer shot of that 1930s lantern on Cameron Road, still clinging on a few days later!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Aug 19, 2008 by RojojnrSpotted on Redwell Street in Norwich on 13th November 2008. Lesser councils would have vandalised this installation by replacing the lantern with an Urbis Albany. Note the wall braces.

Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Oct 10, 2009 by autosignguyEnhanced from poor pic to show a bit better the lights following Truvelo's comment on this pic .
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Sep 22, 2009 by AAndyThere are also some medium length sleeves too. This one has probably been installed as such to install the lantern away from the overhead telephone lines.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Sep 02, 2009 by RojojnrA general look at the installations which dominate Front Lane - as you can see, it is predominantly SOX lit, mostly by 1980s gear-in-shoe MA90s and a few newer MA90/50 casual replacements! There are a few Arcs, an Iridium and SGS203s by the shops further along behind me, but that's OK considering white light is probably needed there to increase safety.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Sep 02, 2009 by RojojnrOn the final approach to the GEC Dioptrion at Dagenham Dock I encountered these very strange and ancient lanterns. But what are they?
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Apr 13, 2009 by YorklettsAnother view showing one of the superb survivors on the approach to Romford greyhound stadium. The A118 London Road can be seen in the background.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Apr 13, 2009 by YorklettsHere's another one of those curvy installations on Clements Road. This example actually replaced a post-top Sapphire which was used as a replacement for a ZX that was crashed into.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Mar 29, 2009 by RojojnrA closer shot of the purple lanterns.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Mar 21, 2009 by RojojnrIs this a CU P109? This elegant-looking lantern is installed on top of an old well in Birchington village square, but it hasn't had a lamp in it for years! I hope a new lamp does get installed, as it looks great!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Dec 14, 2008 by RojojnrI wonder what lanterns will be on the new columns?
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Dec 13, 2008 by TruveloRedundant street lights at Blunsden, Dec 1 2008. I haven't the faintest idea what type they are but, I know some of you do.
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Dec 11, 2008 by SteveA30More Furyos have replaced white deep-bowled ZX3s on this section of Chadwell Heath High Road running alongside the Tesco Extra store. I am, however, bemused by the fact that there are some columns further down with ad boards on them installed in 2006, on which the original ZX3 lanterns were reused, and only two years later they were replaced with Furyos, except for one which bears an SON ZX2 from yesteryear! Redbridge really are losing the plot!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Nov 15, 2008 by RojojnrThanet's fire station is lit with Gamma 6s, which look to run on mercury judging by this dayburner. Margate Road in the foreground used to be lit with lots of GR150s, but they were all sadly replaced with P678s when the new Westwood Cross Shopping Centre just opposite was built!
Originally uploaded to Coppermine on Oct 30, 2008 by RojojnrLooking up at the old and new installations, they can be compared easily! The older columns (this one has an ad board on it, by the way, and was only installed in 2006) are much taller than the new installations, but lack the fancy brackets that the new installations have! The base of the lanterns look very similar, however their overall characteristics are very different! The Metronomis is concave and painted silver, while the Aledo is disc-shaped and is painted black!
