The N66 in County Galway was a link between the N65 at Loughrea and the N18 at Gort. As such, it served as part of a connection between junction 16 of the M6 (north of Loughrea) and junction 16 of the M18 at Gort.
On 27 September 2017, following the completion of the M18 to the M6, providing a direct motorway route, it was downgraded to a regional road.
