South Ellon Junction, also known as Ellon Roundabout is the northern end of the A90 dual carriageway route from Aberdeen, Dundee, Perth and ultimately Edinburgh far away to the south. The last sections of single carriageway to the south were widened in 2018 alongside the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route works, to substantially improve the route to the north east of Aberdeenshire. However, the section immediately south of the roundabout had been dualled earlier. Despite only being accessed by the B9005 at this point, rather than an A road, Ellon is a growing commuter town for Aberdeen, and so this junction is a suitable northern end for the dual carriageway for now at least.
The junction came about as part of the Ellon eastern bypass, built in the late 1980s, and seems to have been a roundabout from the start. The two arms of the A90 each have two approach lanes, but the B9005 surprisingly has 3, although it seems unlikely that much traffic turns left here rather than using the North Ellon Junction. The old line of the A92 can be traced in the hedgerow to the south of the roundabout.
