Play Streets are generally found in older urban settings where surrounding properties are often lacking gardens and there are few if any local playparks for children. The idea is that certain streets are set aside for children to play in and therefore have priority over traffic. They can also be used when a rear lane cuts across the backs of houses, separating them from their garden ground. They are normally signed with the No Vehicles sign and a supplementary plate underneath featuring wording along the lines of "8am to Sunset except for access".
In the example shown on the right, the No vehicles sign has been replaced, presumably by locals, with a 5mph speed limit sign, which, when read with the plate, becomes utter nonsense.
