The original route of the B9003, as classified in 1922, ran from the A947 near Old Meldrum east to the coast at Newburgh, where it ended on the B9005. There was a short multiplex along the B999 at Pitmedden and the A92 further east was originally crossed at a sharply skewed crossroads, although this later became staggered.
In 1934 the route was renumbered as part of an extended B9000, with the multiplex at Pitmedden remaining the B999. Later, in the 1960s, the western half was upgraded as part of the A920, while the eastern end retains the B9000 number.
