The B9061 serves the Rothiesholm area on the western side of the Orkney island of Stronsay.
The route starts at a T junction with the B9060 on the southern slopes of Ward Hill and heads south west, quickly turning onto a long downhill straight between the small square fields that cover the island. It then turns sharp right to complete the descent to the coast, passing the small Loch of Matpow just before reaching the beach at St Catherine's Bay. Now curving westwards, the route quickly crosses the narrow isthmus, although a slight rise to the left means that the Bay of Holland to the south is only just in view. There are a scattering of houses here along the shore, but then the road cuts through the dunes to reach the opposite shore of the Bay of Holland. Despite the proximity to the shore, it is the Loch of Rothisholm on the right, rather than the bay to the left which is more obvious from the road.
The headland then widens out ahead, and the coast meanders off while the road follows a long straight, climbing slightly to a crossroads next to a small hall. Here the route sweeps right and again heads west, dropping down to the shore of the Bay of Bomasty. This is perhaps the most scenic of the beaches passed, curving elegantly around in a single sweep of white sands. The route turns a final time to head south, passing a handful of farms before ending at the driveway to the last, Millgrip. A grassy track continues ahead a short distance, but the southern end of the headland is largely open moorland without any further properties.
