This SABRE Maps Coverage Project is to provide online coverage of the 1:50,000 Series (Landranger) and associated maps. It should be noted that as the initial batch of sheets were published in 1974, these first sheets will not drop out of copyright until 2025. This project is therefore currently in its initial stages of simply gathering as many different revisions as possible ready for that time.

The 1:50,000 Series (now called Landranger) is still the primary mapping at this scale by the Ordnance Survey.

Whilst historically SABRE Maps coverage focusses on civilian coloured editions, and military editions are avoided where possible, it should be noted that most Landranger maps are "dual-purpose".

The First Series used photo-enlarged Seventh Series material, but despite what is often repeated, the mapping was updated for this purpose. The First Series was only ever intended to be an interim measure, and some sheets were never released in the First Series; and were Second Series from the start. For this reason, the First and Second series are treated as a single coverage project for SABRE Maps.

The OS Landranger Series uses the OSGB National Grid and should be georeferenced accordingly.

How do I find out the date of the map?

Annoyingly, the OS didn't actually put the exact date of the map on each map. The date that appears on the map (either with the words Crown Copyright or Made and published by the Director General of the Ordnance Survey) often is not the correct date of the map, but the date of the last full revision. Roads are updated every minor revision, so there is every chance that a map may actually be from several years away from the copyright date.

This was generally changed in 1979, so from this date the copyright date was incremented even on minor revisions.

Revision codes on Landranger sheets can be found in one of two places. In sheets from between 1974 and 1997 they are located right at the bottom left of the map key; whilst in later sheets, they are located at the top of the key.

Revision codes appear in the heading within SABRE Maps, and so this information is extremely valuable to capture.

It also should be noted that the official copyright requirement of Ordnance Survey is that the critical date for copyright purposes is the Crown Copyright date rather than the actual date of the map. This means that some maps less than 50 years old can still appear on SABRE Maps, and not be in breach of copyright.

Progress by every sheet ever printed

This table, with modifications, is taken from Lez Watson's Ordnance Survey Leisure Maps Summary Lists, which is the best online source available for all post-war OS map dating.

Modifications for SABRE Maps use include where two revisions were printed in a single year, then the one nearest to the centre of the year is listed as being from that year, and the other revision shifted into the earlier or later year as appropriate. Note that for precise dating purposes, Lez's site should be treated as the master list, not this.

Within the table, First Series sheets are identified by their revision codes being in italic, for example, A/*/*. Second Series sheets are identified by their revision codes being in normal text, for example, A/*/*.
